About Atlanta
Atlanta is an extensive metropolis where remnants of the old south seem to have disappeared amongst the skyscrapers and cosmopolitan atmosphere. Multiple fortune five hundred companies have chosen to make Atlanta their home, bringing with them many important business professionals. It is consistently referred to as one of the best cities in the world for doing business. It is home to the United States' second largest airport and is the location of where three major highways converge, making this a city easy to access and highly trafficked. To some Atlanta is know for it's convention facilities. To others it is know as the shopping capital of the south. As the thriving, century old capital of Georgia, Atlanta is a preferred destination for both business and leisure.
The city of Atlanta was the center of many civil rights movements that affected forever the both course of the nation and the fight for tolerance. It was also home to many other movements of various natures. History shows that Atlanta has been a bustling city for decades, with importance and influence. Neither Atlanta's influence nor it's importance have declined, but quite the opposite. It continues to grow and develop into an internationally renowned city as a business center and a center of tourism. With over three and a half million people, the future of Atlanta remains full of potential for growth and development.
Atlanta has in recent years developed a regional theme park, Georgia's Stone Mountain Park, which gives many opportunities for both couples and families to enjoy attractions and entertainment. Aside from the theme park, Atlanta offers many other attractions as well including professional sports, a botanical garden, and an unparalleled culinary spectrum. As if that wasn't enough, Atlanta is the host city for many broadway musicals, ballet performances, art museums, science museums, archaeology museums, and much much more. If you want to hear good music, then Atlanta has some of the world's finest musicians, playing jazz, blues, and performing opera.
The MARTA transit system makes getting around Atlanta easy and efficient. Offering both subway and bus transportation, it is easy to access any area of Atlanta. If you're weary of riding the bus, stop off at Merchandise Mart. This is a major center of activity in Atlanta. It is located in the Peachtree Center complex. The Peachtree center covers fourteen city blocks dotted in shops and restaurants. It is known as the pedestrian village and is well connected with bridges and other walkways.
The historic district in Atlanta covers more than ten city blocks. It was designated the National Historic District in 1980, encompassing many historic sites where civil rights advancements were made. Much of the area is noted for it's connection to Martin Luther King Jr. His childhood home is located in Atlanta's historic district as well as a church where he preached, a center for social change, and a museum.
Another noteworthy event in Atlanta's history took place in 1996 when Atlanta hosted the Summer Olympics. After millions of dollars in preparation, the Olympics were successfully hosted. Many of the facilities built for the Olympics are still in use today. The Olympic stadium, site of the opening ceremonies for the '96 games, is now in use as Turner field, home of the Atlanta Braves.
